Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development and Fundamental British Values

Promoting Fundamental British Values

In accordance with The Department for Education we aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain.

Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.

The Key Values are:

•    democracy
•    rule of law
•    individual liberty
•    mutual respect
•    tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

How we promote the fundamental British values

Democracy

  • Having a school council;
  • Highlighting the development of democratic ideas in history lessons;
  • Allowing pupils to vote in a range of situations linked to school life e.g. classes selecting a charity they wish to support via a class ballot;
  • Ensuring all pupils are listened to by adults;
  • Inviting MPs and other speakers to the school;
  • Holding mock elections.

The Rule of Law

  • The whole school creating taking a Pride in their school and how that works in conjunction with school rules.
  • Having a clear behaviour policy that is explained to all;
  • Highlighting the rules of the Church and God in the RE curriculum, for example the 10 commandments and the Precepts of the Church.

Personal Responsibility and Individual Liberty

  • Encouraging children to be independent in their learning;
  • Providing children with opportunities for reflection.

Mutual Respect

  • Having a mission statement that is inclusive;
  • Constantly promoting respect for others as good manners;
  • Reinforcing the value of everyone’s opinions in class discussions;
  • Having an effective anti-bullying policy;
  • Emphasising in RE and PSHE lessons that every person is unique
  • Having active educational links with other schools;
  • Supporting charitable works.

Tolerance of those with difference faiths and beliefs

  • Highlight how Religious Education provides pupils with a deep understanding of their own faith as well as awareness of the faith and traditions of other religious communities as a basis for understanding and respecting them;
  • Encourage  tolerance and understanding

Picture News

To support our teaching of the Fundamental British Values, Protected Characteristics and the UN Rights of the Child we use weekly Picture News Assemblies. The assemblies take a current theme from the news and provide a picture prompt and key questions in order for children to discuss current affairs, ask questions and to spark their interest in the world around them.

The following documents highlight the broad range of news stories covered and the way in which they relate to the teaching of British Values and Protected Characteristics.

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development (SMSC) is essential for children and young people's individual development, as well as the development of society as a whole. At Hose Church of England Primary School, we recognise that the personal development of pupils spiritually, morally, socially and culturally, plays a significant part in their ability to learn, achieve and thrive. We therefore aim to provide an education that gives pupils opportunities to explore and develop their own values and beliefs, spiritual awareness, high standards of personal behaviour, a positive, caring attitude towards other people, an understanding of their social and cultural traditions and an appreciation of the diversity and richness of a range of cultures.

The following document outlines our policy and provision linked to the development of children's Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Education.
